ITP 2017 offers three stimulating and highly informative workshops.

The workshops are lectured by recognized experts in the field and run in parallel on Sunday, September 10 from 9:00 to 13:00.
The course fee is 300 PLN (75 Euro).

The number of places is limited and applications are processed in the order they are received.
To sign up for a given course, please contact workshops@itp2017.com

Workshop 1:
Fundamentals of sample preparation and recent developments in microextraction technologies – where "big" fails "small" can do more

presented by

Dr. Barbara Bojko
(Nicolaus Copernicus University, Poland)

Prof. Janusz Pawliszyn
(University of Waterloo, Canada)
The workshop is addressed to researchers who are familiar with conventional sample preparation methods and want to extend their knowledge to novel analytical strategies used in bioanalysis. First part will be focused on fundamentals of sample preparation and its recent developments, which addresses needs of todays’ world i.e. high throughput, automation, speed and quality of the analysis. This will include novel materials and devices, strategies of couplings with analytical instrumentation such as direct coupling with mass spectrometers and on-site analysis. In the second part, solid phase microextraction and related technologies will be presented with particular focus on non- and low-invasive sampling, spatial resolution and time-course study. Advantages and disadvantages of the methods for quantitative targeted as well as untargeted study will be discussed.

Workshop 2:
Challenges in Analytical Development: The Need in Orthogonal Chromatographic Methods for a Small Molecule Project in Innovative Drug Development

presented by

Dr. Vladimir Ioffe
(Innovative Analytical Development,
Discovery & Product Development,
Global R&D, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Ltd., Israel)

The aim of workshop is to familiarize a mindset of the developer of HPLC methods and to converse the need in complementary “orthogonal” chromatographic procedures and diverse detection techniques for a complex coverage of all the characteristics of a pharmaceutical material.

Workshop is based on a real case of an innovative project, where API is a comparatively simple small molecule – Oleyl ?-Phenylglycinate. This molecule has a cis-double bond, a chiral center in ?-position to aromatic ring and a labile ester bond. The product and starting materials for its synthesis (Phenylglycine and Oleyl Alcohol, which are also its dominant degradation products) have extremely different polarity and lipophilicity. This caused a need in developing complementary methods: a method for “Polar Impurities” using a mixed-mode HPLC column and a method for Oleyl Alcohol – using non-silica based RP column and evaporative detector (ELSD or Corona CAD). Most challenging was achieving of a reliable separation between Oleyl Alcohol and its trans-isomer. In addition, a normal phase enantioselective separation was developed to determine enantiomeric purity. This method was upgraded to bioanalytical, with MS detection.

Principles of work of evaporative detectors and benefits of using alternative (non-UV) detection and a specific case of MS detection with normal phase LC are discussed.

One of important points in analytical development for pharmaceutical industry which should be taken into account – to develop reliable and robust methods, friendly to terminal users, taking into account that they will be routinely run by QC analytical laboratories at a production site.

Presenting on an example of a comparatively simple molecule facilitates understanding and makes the workshop suitable for students and analysts with limited experience.

Workshop 3:
Principles and applications of modern CE-MS

presented by

G.W. Somsen
(Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

This workshop will give an introduction to coupled capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (CE-MS) providing fundamental and comprehensive information on its operative principles and application. The basic approaches for interfacing (sheath-liquid and sheathless) will be outlined and explained. Emphasis will be on the use of electrospray ionization (ESI). Different practical aspects, such as interface designs, voltage handling, choice of background electrolyte, sheath-liquid properties, and sheathless performance, will be discussed. The applicability of CE-MS will be illustrated by a large number of examples covering e.g. metabolic profiling, proteomics, (bio)pharmaceutical analysis, and chiral analysis. Participants preferably should have some basic knowledge on CE and MS principles and instrumentation.

Sopot is a seaside resort on the coast of Baltic Sea in the northern Poland. It is located between two larger cities, Gdańsk and Gdynia, and together with them is a part of metropolitan area called Tricity.

Sopot is famous for sandy beaches spread throughout the area of 4,5 kilometres and the longest wooden pier in Europe stretching into the Bay of Gdańsk. It gives a great opportunity to enjoy a beautiful view of cruise boats anchored in the marina. In the middle of the resort there is a representative street of Bohaterów Monte Cassino, commonly called 'Monciak'. It is a main promenade with a lot of restaurants, pubs and clubs.

There’s no other place like Sopot offering such excellent opportunities for scientific, cultural and social experiences in a unique seaside setting.

Medium temperature in September: 18oC

Time: Poland is in Central European Time Zone. In September clocks are set to GMT +2 hours.

Currency: In Poland the national currency is zloty (PLN). In most places you can only pay using PLN. The easiest way is to exchange euros or dollars at the airport or in one of the exchange offices placed all over the city. In almost all places it is possible to pay by credit card, with an exception when buying a ticket directly from the bus driver.

Electricity: In Poland the power sockets are of type E (http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/e/). The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.
You can use your electric appliances in Poland, if the standard voltage in your country is between 220 - 240 V (as is in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa). Manufacturers take these small deviations into account. If the standard voltage in your country is in the range of 100 V - 127 V (as is in the US, Canada and most South American countries), you need a voltage converter in Poland.
